How much progress has come simply from most games not running on mac

Nearly all the best engineers, founders, and researchers I know are ex-game addicts, use macs, and occasionally google a game they’re excited about, see it’s not on mac, give up and get back to work

Imagine that nearly everyone bringing us the future were hardcore ex-heroin addicts who picked up heroin now and then, realized they didn’t have quite the right equipment to take it, then went back to making the future. afaict this is pretty close to the world we’re in

inspired by frustratedly finding out five min ago that rocket league doesn’t run on mac, which is probably good

Nick @nickcammarata 2021-10-14

on the other hand

Most engineers can afford two computers though. Or can dual-boot macOS and Windows. I don’t think this small amount of friction is what’s stopping them from wasting their time on games

Nick @nickcammarata 2021-10-14

it is for me. I could walk to the store and buy/setup a second laptop but it would take 2-3hrs, and that’s more friction than I’m willing to put in to play rocket league. But if I did successfully get rocket league I could easily see playing it all day (on vacation rn)

i would have doubted this a week ago but I found out that @VitalikButerin got into crypto because he was sad about his WoW character so…

Nick @nickcammarata 2021-10-14

tbh this was the origin story of like half the thiel fellows (of which vitalik was one too)

Phil @blisstweeting 2021-10-14

I basically agree though I’d generalize your statement using UNIX-based instead of MacOS

Steven Liss @This_Liss 2021-10-14

Can confirm. Macs dropped Civ V cross-play, so now I have to build an empire IRL.

Avi Romanoff @aviromanoff 2021-10-14

On the contrary, so much progress in technology has been driven by games and game developers. I wonder how much we’ve lost by largely siloing gaming to one computing platform.
